Seattle Superintendent submits closure recommendations →

Dr. Maria Goodloe-Johnson's recommendations can be summed up this way: close five buildings, relocate eight programs, add one new program and discontinue five programs. It will save the Seattle School District $16.2 million in operating costs and reduce maintenance costs by $33.1 million over five years. Superintendent Goodloe-Johnson and staff used what she calls strict and transparent standards to determine what would stay and what would go. But she admits, closing schools is always emotional. "We agree that ...

Qana Redux: IDF Massacres 42 Civilian Refugees at Gaza UN School →

There are only three scenarios that will end the senseless carnage in Gaza: 1. the world community must coalesce around a demand for an immediate ceasefire. 2. the IDF blunders in an operation which ends in major loss of Israeli life. 3. the IDF blunders and kills a large number of Gaza civilians in a single catastrophic event. Unfortunately, we do not yet have #1, though Barack Obama has ended his Sphinx like silence with the following almost Delphic ...

School closure list announced →

The school closure/consolidation uproar has been going on forever, it seems, with parent advocacy groups holding meetings and making website and trying to keep their school open. This afternoon, the superintendent ultimately recommended five schools for closure: Genesee Hill, home to Pathfinder K-8; Mann, which houses Nova Alternative High School; T.T. Minor and Van Asselt elementaries; and Old Hay Elementary, which houses the Secondary Bilingual Orientation Center [PI]. This takes Montlake Elementary and Alternative School ...

Metro's First Priority Is Safety Secrecy →

Yesterday we posted about Metro's route status updates and suggested you check their adverse weather page for the latest news. Funny story there. We'd walked past a rerouted 10 bus on Broadway--a big branch fell on the bus lines on 15th Avenue East on Sunday night--on the way in to work, but when we checked Metro's page, there was no mention of that reroute. Maybe they already fixed the lines, we thought. But after lunch ...

Can't Miss It: Tuesday →

CAN'T CATCH A BREAK: Nami Mun's novel Miles From Nowhere is about a Korean-American woman in the 1980s who lives out our worst nightmare (underage sex worker, junkie, homeless, it goes on). Seattlest MvB says that the main character is "an affectless screen on which bruises from beatings and ulcerated needle tracks appear without histrionic wailings and gnashings of teeth," and praises Mun's "contemplative eye." Mun will be reading from her book at Elliott Bay ...

iTunes goes DRM-free, gets price adjustments →

In the final announcement of the MacWorld 2009 keynote, Phil Schiller listed off some of the changes coming to the iTunes ecosystem. First and foremost, in our mind, is that iTunes is going completely DRM-free. Starting today, 8 millions songs on the service will be DRM-free, and by the end of March, all 10 million will be without DRM. Consumers will be able to upgrade their entire purchased music library to iTunes Plus, which means ...
